GEO for manufacturers: technical expertise as a source for AI.

GEO prepares verifiable information so a company can be found and cited in AI answers. For industrial businesses, the work starts with clear technical sources, evidence and context.

What does GEO mean in practice?

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is the work of making a company’s information clearer, more accessible and verifiable for systems that produce AI-generated answers. For industrial businesses, the focus is on useful sources about processes, applications, technical criteria and documented experience.

Imagine a question such as “what should I check before hiring a machining supplier?”. An answer may combine criteria from several sources. Your company needs something concrete to contribute: what the drawing should include, what information guides the assessment and how buyers can verify supplier suitability.

GEO does not mean placing a brand in every answer, and there is no universal registration that ensures recommendations. The task is to organize valuable information and monitor how it is found, cited and understood. A mention without accurate context can even confuse buyers.

GEO, AEO and SEO: what changes in the content?

AEO emphasizes answering a question well. GEO takes a broader view of the source material and how the company is represented in generative answers. SEO supports page access and search discovery. Industry terminology varies, but buyers still need reliable information.

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode do not require special optimization: the page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet. It also does not require a special AI file or schema. These requirements concern Google; other systems have their own access policies.

For question-and-answer structure, see the AEO guide.

How information can reach a generative answer

For content planning, it helps to separate four stages: page discovery, retrieval of a relevant passage, answer composition and possible citation. This is a way to structure analysis, not a description of one universal algorithm. Each product combines models, indexes, tools and policies differently.

StageWhat to check on your website
DiscoveryInternal links, sitemap, crawler access and stable URLs.
UnderstandingSpecific title, definitions, context and available main text.
EvidenceSources, authorship, application conditions and data with a method.
CitationCited URL, passage used and whether the answer represents the source accurately.

Being crawled does not prove that content entered an index. Being indexed does not prove it will be used in an answer. And being cited does not mean receiving a visit or a business opportunity. Keeping these stages separate prevents attractive reports that do not support decisions.

What evidence can an industrial business publish?

A useful starting point is often inside the company: explained procedures, supported applications, recurring questions, authorized records and the criteria your team uses to assess a project. Turn this material into public information only after checking accuracy, permission and context.

  • Process pages: explain what is done, for whom, with which inputs and which limitations require assessment.
  • Technical comparisons: present selection criteria and conditions without declaring one process universally superior.
  • Case studies: describe the problem, delivered scope, period, measurement method and attribution limits.
  • Original data: state units, sample, period, collection method and accountable owner. Separate measurements from estimates.
  • Technical documents: identify edition, scope, date and connection to the service. Do not claim unverified certifications.

Engrenza’s Artec case study presents delivered work and client-reported results with reporting-period and funnel context. It can show how to document a project, but it should not be presented as evidence of GEO results: one does not demonstrate the other.

Example: turning a vague promise into a useful source

“We are a leading provider of high-quality industrial solutions” offers no verifiable criterion. Instead, a page about supplier qualification can explain which information should be checked before approving a project.

  • Scope: identify the process and application being discussed. Avoid descriptions that could fit any supplier.
  • Capability: state only confirmed limits and explain which conditions need individual assessment.
  • Verification: identify the document, record or person who can confirm the information.
  • Decision: show what the buyer should submit and what must still be agreed before a proposal.

When presenting a number, keep its meaning nearby. “46 quotations” and “46 sales” are different statements. A table showing the period, definition and source is more useful than an isolated headline number. This discipline also reduces the risk of an automated answer repeating data out of context.

Search crawlers and training crawlers are different

Before changing robots.txt, identify each agent’s purpose. OpenAI distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, used for ChatGPT search, from GPTBot, which concerns content that may be used for training. These preferences can be configured separately. ChatGPT-User handles certain user-initiated actions and is not the search crawler.

OpenAI: crawler roles

Perplexity describes PerplexityBot as a crawler for surfacing and linking websites in search results, separate from foundation-model training. However, a permissive robots.txt rule does not resolve a hosting or firewall block.

Perplexity: search crawlers

During an audit, check the published rule, access logs and infrastructure restrictions. Validate agents using available official mechanisms because a user-agent string can be imitated. Avoid allowing traffic indiscriminately or changing security policies solely to chase visibility.

Architecture, identity and languages: keep information consistent

Use the same company name, business description and official contact channels on institutional pages and profiles you control. Connect services, applications, guides and case studies with links that explain the relationship. Readers should be able to identify the provider and locate the cited evidence.

On the website, Organization or ProfessionalService can represent the business; Article describes the guide; BreadcrumbList explains navigation. Choose types that match the actual content. Do not invent reviews, awards or people to increase the amount of structured data.

In Portuguese and English, preserve the technical meaning, including qualifications and units. Maintain one stable URL per language and consistent hreflang relationships. Translating only the title leaves visitors without a usable version and creates contradictory editorial signals.

A PDF can supplement a page, but the central explanation should also be easy to read on the website. Identify the document revision and correct outdated materials. An llms.txt file may serve as a supplementary index; it does not replace navigation, a sitemap or content, and does not ensure citations.

What GEO research supports

The paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization by Aggarwal and colleagues investigates ways to measure and improve source visibility in generative engines. It is a useful reference for understanding the topic, but its experiments involve specific conditions, query sets and systems.

A gain observed in research is not a prediction for your website. Nor does it prove that adding FAQs, statistics or technical terminology produces a fixed percentage improvement. Publish numbers because they clarify something and can be substantiated, not to satisfy a supposed citation formula.

How to measure GEO with a repeatable sample

Create a small list of real questions, separating commercial and technical topics. Record the exact wording, platform, search mode, language and date. Repeat the protocol at defined intervals without changing every question each time. Answers may vary even when the website does not change.

IndicatorHow to record itLimitation
MentionCompany name in the observed answer.May occur without a link or recommendation.
CitationAnswer linking to a URL on the domain.Does not prove a click or future preference.
AccuracyCited information compared with the source.Requires review of context and qualifications.
Traffic and contactsAvailable referrer, landing page and qualified contact. Some visits do not preserve referral information.

As an internal indicator, you can calculate the share of answers with a citation: answers citing the domain divided by all valid observed answers. In a hypothetical example, 4 out of 20 answers equal 20% of the sample. This is not overall market share, average ranking or conversion rate.

Read these records alongside search and CRM data. Keep brand clicks, service queries and contacts within your service scope separate. An accurate citation on an important topic may justify deepening a page; one isolated observation does not justify rebuilding the entire website.

An implementation plan with verifiable deliverables

  1. Diagnosis: inventory pages, sources, language versions and access barriers. Record findings before changing the website.
  2. Editorial pilot: choose a priority service and a relevant question. Produce a guide with context, evidence, limitations and a contact route.
  3. Review: confirm claims with the technical owner and check references, links, metadata and mobile readability.
  4. Publication and monitoring: record the version, confirm indexing and observe the same question set over time.
  5. Expansion: deepen topics with recurring questions or actual sales opportunities. Update when facts and sources change.

Assign an owner to each stage. Technical staff validate the process; sales brings buying questions; content organizes the explanation; development ensures access and presentation. Without shared responsibility, material tends to become attractive, generic and hard to maintain.

Frequently asked questions about GEO

Does GEO guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my company?

No. Source selection and answer formulation depend on the system and the question. This work improves information quality and availability but does not control recommendations.

Must I allow AI training to appear in search?

Do not treat these permissions as equivalent. OpenAI provides independent controls for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot. Check each platform’s documentation before defining access policies.

Is GEO the same as local SEO?

Here, GEO means Generative Engine Optimization. It does not refer to geolocation. Local SEO concerns business discovery in searches related to a geographical area.

Should I create different content for every assistant?

Start with one clear, reliable primary source. Adapt language and context when needed, but avoid multiplying nearly identical versions just to mention platforms.

Does a mention without a link count as a result?

It can be recorded as an observed mention. Keep it separate from linked citations, visits and business opportunities, and verify whether the information about the company is accurate.
