Google Ads for manufacturers: how to reduce unqualified leads

The direct answer

To reduce unqualified industrial Google Ads leads, compare the searches triggering your ads with the services and customer profile your company serves. Review exclusions, geography and the landing page. Then assess contact quality with sales: a WhatsApp click does not confirm a sales opportunity.

The phone rings, forms arrive and the dashboard records conversions. Yet the salesperson ends the day saying almost none were useful. Before concluding that Google Ads does not work for your industrial business, separate two situations: attracting the wrong person and losing a request you could have served.

A workshop asking for a single part may not fit a production machining supplier. A buyer who has not specified the material may still have a viable project. Calling both a “bad lead” hides the cause and can lead to changes that exclude good opportunities.

What is a qualified lead for an industrial business?

It is a contact whose need fits what the company can supply and contains enough information to advance the commercial assessment. The criteria should be agreed with whoever assesses feasibility, rather than decided by marketing alone.

Define the process, materials, dimensions, batch range, service area and application. Distinguish a confirmed mismatch from missing information. If thickness was not provided, the next step may be to ask; if it exceeds the equipment’s actual capacity, there is a technical reason not to proceed.

Find where the inquiry stops fitting

Review a sample of inquiries with sales, without exposing personal data in public reports. Record the disqualification reason and, where measurement allows, the originating campaign and page. The goal is to find a pattern you can correct.

Read the actual search, not just the keyword

A keyword is a campaign setting; a search term is what the person typed. This distinction explains why a seemingly technical campaign may attract unrelated searches. Review the available report and compare intentions with the reasons recorded by sales.

Hypothetical example: a surface treatment company receives searches for “electroplating course” and “zinc plating company for industrial parts.” These are different intentions. The first may warrant exclusion from a services campaign; the second needs a page explaining materials, applications and service limits.

Do not decide from the expression alone. A broad technical term can appear in a legitimate search. Before blocking it, examine the context, recurrence and associated inquiries where information is available.

Use negative keywords without excluding the right buyer

A negative keyword prevents certain searches from triggering the ad. The match type and the level where it is applied change its scope. An account-level list can affect campaigns selling different things; a specific exclusion may belong only in one ad group.

Do not copy a ready-made list of “bad B2B keywords.” “Manual,” for example, can indicate documentation or be part of the name of equipment you sell. Review the full combination. Too many negatives can also prevent relevant searches, as Google explains.

Your ad and website need to say whom you serve

If an ad promises “complete solutions” but the company handles only one process, visitors may interpret the offer too broadly. Name the service performed and send people to the relevant page. Avoid sending every campaign to a homepage that makes buyers restart their search.

On the page, present applications, materials, actual limits, service area and information needed for a quotation. For made-to-drawing parts, explain how to provide documentation through the appropriate channel. Do not demand details the buyer does not yet have simply to make the form more selective.

Geography also needs an operational assessment. The buyer’s location and the parts’ destination can differ. Match the campaign to the logistics your company can support, rather than a generic rule of advertising only near the factory.

How to choose between a landing page and a website

Separate interactions, contacts and opportunities

A WhatsApp click indicates an intention to open a conversation. It does not prove a message was sent, an industrial need exists or a sale occurred. A received form also needs assessment. Combining these events into one reading can make a campaign appear better than sales experiences.

Track stages separately: recorded interaction, inquiry received, qualified request, quotation sent and deal completed. Define what moves a contact forward, how to handle duplicates and who updates its status. Compare equivalent periods and allow time to assess a technical request.

Where suitable infrastructure and data handling are in place, offline conversion imports can send commercial stages back to Google Ads. This requires its own configuration and validation; having a CRM installed does not mean that integration is already happening.

A review routine that sales can use

Start with recurring reasons, correct the likely source and record the change. Avoid changing targeting, messaging, forms and conversion objectives simultaneously: it becomes difficult to know what helped. Match review frequency to data volume, without drawing conclusions from one inquiry.

  • Ask sales why the inquiry was lost, not simply whether it was good.
  • Check whether the inquiry arrived and received a response before blaming its source.
  • Compare the share of usable requests and their progress to quotation.
  • Document exclusions and changes so decisions can be revisited.

Frequently asked questions

Should every job-related search be excluded?

In a services campaign, searches clearly seeking jobs generally do not match the offer. Check the term and context. If the company also advertises recruitment, keep objectives separate to avoid blocking the wrong campaign.

Do more form fields improve quality?

Only when they help assess the request and the buyer can answer them. Unnecessary fields can deter valid inquiries. Ask for what is needed for the next step and refine the specification during follow-up.

Can every unsuitable inquiry be eliminated?

There is no guarantee of eliminating every unsuitable inquiry. The aim is to reduce waste without blocking relevant demand. Search terms, offer, landing page and sales assessment need to be reviewed together.
