SEO for manufacturers: where to start

Industrial keyword research, process-based website architecture, validated technical content, and the mistakes that most often block indexing.

Start with the market's real terminology, create one page per process, ensure search engines can read the website, and produce content that answers specification questions. In that order, because each step depends on the one before it.

What industrial SEO solves, and what it does not

SEO does not create demand. It captures demand that already exists.

That is both a limitation and an advantage. If nobody searches for what your company does, search optimization will not generate inquiries; another approach is needed. But someone researching a process, specification, or supplier has already defined the problem and is considering a budget. That is highly qualified demand.

For most industrial companies, those searches exist. What is missing is a page that answers them.

Step 1 — Discover the market's real terminology

Every project starts by understanding how the market describes what you do. That vocabulary rarely matches the company's internal terminology.

Industrial searches follow several patterns:

  • Process — the technical name, including regional variations and industry synonyms.
  • Application — what it is used for, on which part, and in which industry.
  • Specification — standards, thicknesses, materials, tolerances, and tests.
  • Problem — "corroding part," "salt spray test failure," or "out of tolerance." These searchers have not chosen a supplier yet. Whoever explains the cause is often the first to be contacted afterward.
  • Commercial intent — combinations with "company," "supplier," "service," "quote," and a location.
Where to find these termsThe best sources are already inside the company: questions sales receives over the phone, words used in quote request emails, and the way existing customers describe the service.

Step 2 — One page per topic

This is the structural change with the greatest impact, and the one most often overlooked.

A single page listing every service does not address any one of them specifically. To compete for "electrolytic zinc plating" or "stainless steel laser cutting," you need a page that covers the topic in depth.

Each process page should cover:

  • Technical description and where the process is used
  • Actual capabilities: dimensions, thicknesses, volumes, and limits
  • Materials processed
  • Standards, tests, and controls, where applicable
  • Typical industries and applications
  • Frequently asked questions from specifiers
  • A direct route to requesting a quote

This architecture also makes the website expandable: new processes become new pages without reorganizing what already works.

Step 3 — Make sure search engines can read it

Excellent content on an unreadable website will not rank. Common problems include:

  • Generic page titles. Every page needs a distinct, descriptive title. Using only the company name on every page makes their topics harder to distinguish.
  • Information available only in images or PDFs. Google can index PDFs and images, including JPG files, according to its documentation on indexable file types. Even so, publish important capabilities, specifications, and tables in HTML text too. That improves mobile reading, accessibility, and the path to a quote. The PDF can remain available as supporting material.
  • A broken heading hierarchy. One H1 per page, with subheadings in order.
  • Unmanaged indexing. A sitemap submitted to Search Console, a configured robots file, and a defined canonical URL.
  • Performance and mobile usability. These are part of the page experience assessment.
  • Internal links. Related pages should link to each other, sharing relevance and helping navigation.

Step 4 — Content that builds authority

Process pages capture people who know what they want. Broader content reaches people still forming a decision and often influences the specification that later eliminates competitors.

Formats that work in industrial contexts:

  • Technical comparisons — when to use one process rather than another, based on objective criteria.
  • Answers to specification questions — what determines coating thickness, tolerance, or material for each application.
  • Problem diagnosis — why a part failed and what to investigate.
  • Application-specific pages — the same process explained for different industries or part types.

Comparisons and project accounts are more useful when they show decision criteria, process limits, and evidence of the company's experience. Identify who validated the information and, when presenting results, state the period, data source, and context.

What about AI search? According to Google's guide to generative AI search, SEO best practices remain the foundation: crawlable pages and useful, reliable content grounded in firsthand experience. For an industrial company, that might mean explaining a process choice with real examples and verifiable data. This helps buyers assess the company but does not guarantee inclusion or citation in AI answers.

The most common mistakes

  • Artificial keyword repetition. It has not worked for years and makes content harder for decision-makers to read.
  • Creating nearly identical pages by changing only a city or a word. Search engines notice, and visitors do too.
  • Publishing unverified technical claims. In an industrial context, claiming compliance with a standard you do not meet creates a real business risk.
  • Treating SEO as an afterthought. Reorganizing an already indexed website involves redirects, temporary ranking losses, and rework.
  • Giving up after two months. SEO builds over time, and stopping interrupts that progress.

An honest timeline

A realistic timeline for industrial businesses:

  • The first few weeks — technical fixes take effect, new pages get indexed, and the company appears for its own name and very specific terms.
  • A few months — process pages gain positions for technical terms combined with materials, specifications, or locations.
  • More time — broad, competitive terms also depend on links from other websites.

Nobody controls the algorithm, and guaranteed timelines lead to disappointment. What you can track is indexed pages, terms the company appears for, search clicks, and the decisive indicator: quote requests originating from organic search.

A sequence for the first 90 days

  1. Research the terminology using the questions your sales team already receives.
  2. Audit what exists — titles, speed, indexing, and information trapped in images.
  3. Create the priority process pages, starting with the services the company most wants to sell.
  4. Configure Search Console and submit the sitemap.
  5. Publish the first articles answering real specification questions.
  6. Monitor what gets indexed and which terms the company starts appearing for.

None of this depends on an advertising budget. It depends on expressing the company's existing knowledge in language buyers and search engines can understand.
